DeLorean DMC UK Office Reunion in Coventry |

Hi,
After a stroke of luck/fate I was very lucky to take part in a reunion of the DeLorean staff based at the Coventry office. The week before I'd attended the Coventry Festival of motoring, and had purely by chance positioned my car right outside where the original office once stood. Barrie Wills contacted me following a post of my car at the event on facebook and asked if I knew how close I was to the original office, and if I would be so kind as to make my car available for the reunion and photoshoot outside the Coventry Council office, and then attend a meeting with the Mayor of Coventry, and the reunion meal after. Of course my answer was Yes!
What followed was a very memorable photo shoot and meal, in which I got to meet some key players in the DeLorean story. Trying not to be too much of a fan boy, and also not to intrude too much on what was after all their reunion I did hear some great stories about their time with DeLorean. Stuart Craven and his stories about developing the cars frame, and driving the Legand turbo car (manual five speed) for the first time round the ring road of Coventry, not to mention getting a ticket in Northern Island while speeding to the Dunlop factory in an over heating DeLorean. How Barrie Wills hard talked the Volvo boss in order to get key engine parts and many other great stories, which I'll try and post up (as long as they don't mind).
I've uploaded a few images of the photoshoot, and a couple of videos if people are interested to my facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/thedeloreanproject

UK registered.
2 previous owners.
9 months MOT.
Circa 38,000 miles.
An un-used spare and jack type of car.
It spent the first 23 years of its life as a weekend driver, in the dry state of Nevada.
The second owner always kept it garaged.
As such, rust to the chassis is at an absolute minimum.
It has had........
New sport cat exhaust.
New callipers, disc's and pads all round.
New clutch and brake lines.
New master cylinder.
New lowered springs all round.
New adjustable DMC shocks.
New petrol pump and sender.
New window regulators and switches.
New Firestone Front tyres.
New battery with isolator switch.
New lower speedo cable.
Cosmetically, it could do with a couple of things, new seat covers, cigarette lighter is cracked etc. Over the past 34 years there have been a couple of little dings inflicted.

Compression problem |

Our car is in getting a major service at a specialist, and he's discovered one cylinder that is significantly lower on compression than the rest - I'm not sure on the figures, but it's enough for him to be concerned. Is there anything these engines tend to suffer from? Do they burn valves?
I'm thinking, from best to worst, it could be a) head gasket, b) damaged valve, c) damaged valve seat, d) sticking piston rings, e) damaged piston rings, or f) damaged bore.

Hello DOC,
I've just signed up since I'm getting ready to take my loving of the DMC-12 to the next level. I will be starting my search for one soon - looking for a refurbished one but expecting not to pile on the mileage, rather I'll be admiring it in my garage and take it out for short jaunts whenever I can. I've not been your typical classic car enthusiast and know little about how they work which is why being part of this community will be important to find answers to the probably dumb questions I may have. This will be my first classic car purchase. I just hope I make the right decision when finding one to buy.
Whilst introducing myself I also have one question that has crossed my possibly naïve mind. How do you wash the exterior of a DeLorean? Does the brushed steel require any special treatment? Would you do it all by hand or can a domestic high pressure hose used? What detergents would you apply? Any hint's and tips would be good to know.
Thanks.

If I'm to get a DMC12 in 2 yrs I'd like to ask some Q's ? |

I'm relatively new to this forum and I guess some would say that answers to my questions could possibly be found via the search facility?
However, I'd like to dip my toes into the waters of this forum and get to interact with owners using this facility.
So I retire in 2 years (earlyish!!) and promised myself a car project. I do have a modicum of mechanical knowledge having worked a lot with KDF wagons - or VW Beetles (air cooled) to the uninitiated.
Ok here goes my first question (of I hope, many).
If I were to import a DMC 12 into the UK, would I be able to change the exhaust system stripping out the debilitating smog emission hardware, but still meeting UK requirements?
If so, can anybody suggest leads to the upgraded/replacement parts that I would need?
Cheers
Spud

To all member in the Essex area we have a breakfast meeting for 50-70's classic car (classic GT's, sports cars. High performance, racing and rally cars) . Early Deloreans would fit the bill. I would just emphasisen that it is a car meet for like minded enthusiast and their guest not open to the public. The meet is based at a local historic venue and breakfast is served in the officers mess. If this would be of interest to you please look us up on face book Essex Classic Cars and Coffee, and request to join the group for full details. Regards Simon Garrett ECCC
