Am I missing something here? Like a rubber stopper or something that covers the idle mixture hole? How does this compare to other people's?
Would appreciate the advice here.

That hole should be blocked, otherwise unmetered air will enter the manifold, which will screw up your mixture. Not by a lot, but it does make a notable difference.
I have seen many things used including chopped down golf tees, the end of a silicone cartridge (that used to be mine) and a suitably sized bolt.
There is a pretty rubber stopper with a hoop on the end available from Houston
