  Draining / Refilling engine coolant - procedure?
Posted by: lordivanhoe - 11 May 2021, 14:16 - Forum: 1 - Engine - Replies (25)

Hello!
I wish to change the coolant fluid on Bessie as a matter of 'new to me' course - given the nature of the system (rads at the front, engine at the back, great long pipes inbetween), is there a particular or preferred method of draining down and refilling?
Otherwise I'll just:
i/ disconnect wherever I can at the apparently lowest point to drain;
ii/ reconnect once drained;
iii/ fill as best I can;
iv/ start and run for a few moments;
v/ top up;
vi/ repeat steps iv/ and v/ until level stabilises at 'full'.
Any advice gratefully received!
Cheers,
Ivan.

  VIN #2045 (Bessie) Is Here!
Posted by: lordivanhoe - 11 May 2021, 12:17 - Forum: Members Cars - Replies (42)

        Hi All;

Well, I joined the club a couple of months or so ago (and have been merrily kicking off loads of threads with various queries - thanks to everyone who supplied me with answers, and particularly to Chris W who helped me out with my importation paperwork!) and am now pleased to say that *MY* (OMG!) D has safely arrived!

All done online: searched for and purchased in the US, and then imported.  Just keeping my fingers crossed that all is well and there's no major issues!

She certainly runs, but I've had to replace the flat battery.  Apparently the guys at the UK import end used jump/boost starters to get her going 3 times (having stalled her on the clutch after the first 2 goes!) and so once they got her on the trailer they left her running!!  :-o

Fortunately she kept running whilst on the trailer all the way from Southampton to my house and didn't a/ run out of petrol or b/ massively overheat and explode, so I'm taking that as a good sign.  I then managed to drive her safely onto my drive (without stalling!), as you can see..

Have since replaced the battery (absolutely dead!) and given her a couple of trial starts.  She starts nicely but seems to run a little roughly - partly I suspect she is low on fuel!
So, I'll put in a gallon or so of nice fresh clean lovely petrol and go again.  Will only run her for a little bit to warm up, then I've got a new oil filter and oil to go in as a 'starter for ten' to make sure she's treated nicely before any more extended running..!

And then: lights to change, PAX door handle to fix, then hopefully MOT and paperwork..
In the meantime I'm sure I'll come up with other questions.
Such as...
a/ there's a 'hissing' noise comes from behind the dash as soon as I 'key on'.  Could perhaps be the air con working?  Is this normal?
Anyone got any clues/ideas/knowledge?
b/ she's tricky to get into reverse.  I'm hoping that adjusting the gear cable underneath towards the back will give her a little more freedom to move the stick in that direction and then this'll improve.. am I barking up the wrong tree?
Very grateful for any advice, I'm sure there'll be more!

Oh yes, and I've called her 'Bessie'.  Like the Highwayman's horse..     Cool

Cheers!
Ivan..
Hmm.  Not quite sure I'm getting the 'add picture' thing right here.  Could be anything from zero to five pics attached!  Let's see.. Tongue

  Door pull strap attachment
Posted by: nasher - 10 May 2021, 13:32 - Forum: 8 - Frame / Body / Interior - Replies (2)

I had to remove the door panels to repair my driver's side electric window that had come out of the runner. Whilst I had the panels off, I could see that the door pull strap was not fixed to anything inside the panel and (stupidly) just put the panel back on.

Now the pull strap came off in my hand the other day, so I'm going to need to fix it properly.

How should this be attached? It looked as though mine had some stitching that had come unstitched, but what should stop this pulling out of the slot

Cheers
Paul

  ASI / DMC Radio wanted
Posted by: nasher - 08 May 2021, 18:23 - Forum: DeLorean Cars or Parts For Sale or Wanted - Replies (12)

I would like to fit an original radio to my delorean. Being quite a late car (without the clock) I think this would be an ASI radio?

At the moment I have a Retro Sounds radio fitted and it doesn't look too out of place, but I really prefer the look of an original

Hi Guys
how are you dealing with the eye brows on the delorean where the headlamp heat misshapes the front panel ??

  New member, saying hi!

Hi everyone, just joined the club over the weekend after having owned my DeLorean for just over a month!

Still getting to know the car and working through a list of things that need fixing or tinkering

I absolutely love the car and have used it every day (when it's dry).In fact, I need to increase my insurance annual mileage, as I have a feeling I'm going to be going over my limit!

Cheers

  I found a "modern" Spare Wheel that fits.
Posted by: SpudMurphy - 30 Apr 2021, 20:18 - Forum: 6 - Brakes / Wheels / Tyres - Replies (2)

Having a friend with his own scrap yard proved invaluable for finding a modern wheel that will fit the front, rear and spare wheel well.
A conventional wheel from a Mazda MX5 was damn close, - it fitted the front but the rear just fouled on a small casting protruding from the rear brake caliper. I was getting ready to file off that casting when I tried a Wheel, again from a Mazda MX5 2005, that was a Wolfrace wheel and it was as if it was made for the D.
Ok, so it uses a 195 50 R15, but it fits the wheel well - it's just taller than a space saver!
The prices of original spare wheels has all gone a bit silly over recent years, so I was happy to get this one.
Photo 1 - rear and it clears the caliper perfectly
Photo 2 - shows the internal profile of the wheel
Photo 3 - shows clearance around the front wheel bearing race
Photo 4 shows the plastic centre cap Wolfrace Asia Tec
Photo 5 - shows the size of the Wolfrace wheel per the casting marks (Other marks showed that the wheel must have been after market. The car was 2005 and the wheels were made in July 2008).

Very happy to have found something that works and saved a bloody fortune !
