I feel like a stripper whose bar just burned down.
I'm one of those that was a dmctalk regular, and now I'm searching for a home. A new place to strip, if you will. I'll spare you that, though.
I'm SamHill and I bought VIN 7041 in November of 2003 and after a lot of work, it's just about ready for heavy road use.
Between this place, dmchelp and the Irish board, I wonder where us sad yanks will end up.

All very odd, DMC talk was one of the best sites around (apart from this one :wink: ) hope they get it sorted and back up soon, WITHOUT losing all the info on there.

Hi Sam, I'm still Stunned Monkey round these parts
My brief experience of DMCHelp was that they throttled anything promoting products other than those available through the DMC franchise... I hope DMCTalk is back up and running real soon. The balance of moderation is just right for everyone

I am temporarily homeless too, though I have been a bi-poster here for a while. Some great info on here too. They have been at it longer than 'talk too.
As Chris says, hope 'talk is up again soon, with data intact. I hear they are actively working on it, but with no fixed resuscitation date.

I have no idea. The stories are conflicting. On the one hand, they call it a 'technical difficulty' and on the other hand, some of the more knowledgeable techsters believe with a great degree of certainty that the board was purposely taken down. Now that Tamir seems to be back in charge all of the sudden, one wonders if there was a rift of some sort.

I'm now more convinced it's a domain ownership issue.
One of the "tricks" ISPs can pull when you register a domain is to register it in their own name rather than the person who requested it. For example:
I own delorean.co.uk and robotcombat.co.uk
Chris P owns deloreans.co.uk
This information is in the public domain by running a WHOIS search on t'internet.
DMCTalk however is registered to "GoDaddy" - the site that comes up now when you try to visit it.
This is pure speculation but I suspect they wanted to move to a cheaper ISP and let their subscription lapse. It was at this point that they discovered they didn't own the rights to the domain and it can only be had from "GoDaddy" by stumping up another years' subs....
My site was locked by the host ISP once upon a time because a certain individual hadn't paid the bill. Luckily because I own it, I was able to rescue it via Nominet to a new ISP where I had full control.

GoDaddy are a DNS registrar for various TLD's, they also provide hosting and website creation services. From experieince I can say that when you register a domain with them you have full control over all the domain A/CNAME/MX records and can point them to whichever IP address you desire. I for example host a number of websites in my garage on my personal RIPE allocated IP range, GoDaddy just provide the DNS service i.e. they don't care who the hosting company is.
After performing a WHOIS against the GoDaddy servers directly it appears that whom ever registered the DMCTalk.com domain choose to utilise the Anonymity Proxy Service, so at this time it is not possible to find who the ultimate 'regitrar' of the domain is.
