Engine Overhaul
#1
I am pricing overhauling my engine as once the covers are all nice and shiney I don't want to have to open them up every week. I have priced parts from DMCH and Simon Auto in Germany for parts. Can anyone suggest anywhere else? Also Simon Auto have quoted the parts from a Volvo B28F engine. What parts are compatible and what are not?

Here is a list of the parts I plan on replacing

OVERHAUL GASKET KIT 1
ENGINE MOUNT 2
PISTON RING SET 6
CON ROD SCREW 12
MAIN BEARING SHELL SET 1
CON ROD BEARING SET 1
TIMING CHAIN 2
CHAIN TENSIONER 2
CYLINDER HEAD SCREW 16
LOCATING DOWEL 4
6 PK OIL FILTERS 1
OIL PUMP CHAIN 1
HEAD GASKET 123 1
HEAD GASKET 456 1
MIXTURE UNIT GASKET KIT 1
FUEL DIST 0-RING 1

to be honest with you i would buy a 760 and use the engine as there is no difference apart from the internals, but if you have money to burn its up to you Failing that just re-shell it all the rest should be ok, especially if you still have the honing marks on the bores TT

My point is I have a 28 year old engine which I don't know how well it has been serviced or driven. 28 years of perishing seals and gaskets. Re-shelling feels like just sticking my head in the sand to be honest. It is not a case of money to burn but in the long term it is beneficial to perform preventative maintenance to iradicate any underlying issues.

I know of an engine with 16k on it available for a price less than my current overhaul price but again I don't know the background of this engine and even though it is low mileage, it doesn't mean the seals and gaskets haven't perished and the oil wells haven't become clogged.

I am rebuilding this car to last. Galvanised chassis upwards.

On my rebuild I put my engine back in as it was. It ran perfectly and used no oil at all. If it ain't broke don't fix it  Granted on a delorean that expression usually means fix everything

Each to their own and all that. I just think when parts are getting more scarce as time is going by, it is as good a time as any to undertake this task since the engine is out anyway.

I hope so. Finances and my patience are two major factors though.

My 2p worth is this .... have you checked all those parts to see if they actually need replacing buddy... These engines, with proper oil changes never stop to amaze me how well they look after 27+ years, I agree with Dan /TT if it aint broke....

Regards

Well if thats the case good luck mate, im only offering advice as you will only be throwing money away if rings shells chains are all well within tolerances. Check the valley for rot in the deepest parts as they are the main oil feed to the main bearings if in doubt get it welded up. And if you can try and read the colours on the paper shims that would save a lot of time with liner heights.
If you need advice just post on here im into my third rebuild TT

Having done a couple of engine re-builds, I'm afraid I would also go down the leave it alone except for painting the 'V' of the block. Other than the corrosion of the block these are very good strong engines (300k area) I only know of one that has bust a chain!
If your determind to check it out properly, then drain the oil, pull the engine and g/box out. Turn the engine upside down and carefully remove the sump and sandwich plate and then you can check the condition of the shells without disturbing the rest of the engine (heads/Pistons/liners Etc). You can then change a few oil seals/clutch whilst your there.
From your list everything should be interchangeable all ok, except perhaps the engine mounts.

At the moment I am pricing items and availability. My engine will be mounted on the stand in the next week and dismantled. The gaskets disturbed during the dismantling will be replaced but I am not going to replace parts unless it is necessary, or if the parts are reasonably priced then I will renew them. Here is the prices I have at the minute. As you can see it isn't cheap!

Have you had a price from Ed for a new engine? DMCH have huge amounts of NOS engines still on the shelves. It might be cheaper than fitting all new parts into an un-known block, as this is the part that is really starting to fail with age. Just a thought :o
