I think Dan its £50 duty, then 17.5% of the total cost,car ,shipping fees, and the duty,
e.g. car £10,000
shipping £1000
agent fees £300
duty £50
total £11350
vat £1986
these are rough figures dont quote me :lol:

From what I read it was like this:

# UK Import Duty (10% of Car Cost + Shipping)
# UK VAT (17.5% of Import Duty + Shipping)

yep. I remember reading that but i'm not sure how old that is, things have changed
I too was surprised when I was told I had to pay vat on the price of the car, but i figured with the duty now only being £50 its swings and round abouts :?

hi just another bit of info you probably know.

but if you book in for an MOT that day, you are allowed to drive with no plates to the mot station and then home.
you do not need trade plates.

after that to and from any booked in repairs.

you must have insurance on the vin though.

this is completely legal.

they don't like the distance i think but there is no stipulation from DVLA.

i have driven many cars from southampton to wolverhampton this way (180 miles plus).
Been stopped a few times, but let on my way.

if you do, make sure you have downloaded the data from dvla's site to show the copper as not all are aware of the legality.

Anyone else know the current rules on importing? If it was as I thought, UK Import Duty (10% of Car Cost + Shipping) and UK VAT (17.5% of Import Duty + Shipping) that would work out cheaper than paying 17.5% of the whole lot wouldn't it?

your best bet is to speak to the experts in importing DeLoreans, Darren and Chris at PJ Grady in Essex.

They'll be at the NEC this weekend with Pilot 20 if you're coming up?

For clarity, the tax burden is as follows:

£50 flat duty rate
17.5% VAT on the sum of the car purchase price, the shipping costs and the £50 duty.

Worked example,

Car purchase £10000.
+ £1300 shipping costs and port fees
+ £50 duty
VAT = (£10000+£1300+£50)*17.5% = £1968

Probably my maths wrong then!!

Car purchase £10000.
+ £1300 shipping costs and port fees
+ 10% duty = (11300 + 10%) = £1130
VAT on Shipping + Duty = (£1300+£1130)*17.5% = £425.25
£425 + £1130 = £1555.25

Car purchase £10000.
+ £1300 shipping costs and port fees
+ £50 duty
VAT = (£10000+£1300+£50)*17.5% = £1968

Seems a tiny bit cheaper to me, or have I not worked it out properly? I used this info :

# UK VAT (17.5% of Import Duty + Shipping)

If only Dan!

The VAT is applied to the cost of the car too - after all, that's the true commodity that you're importing, the rest are supplementary costs.

The 10% rule has NOT been scrapped - but DeLoreans can be exempted from it as they are British built cars - so are technically reimports.

You need to state this clearly on the C384 form - and hammer the point in order to get the discount....otherwise C&E just treat it as a normal foreign car import and hit you with the full 10%....

Now, about that Mars bar....
