Fitting Hellas

Okay, As only Hella are available now, I need to alter light holders to take side lights.
I've stripped down front end, cleared out the mummified mouse, and trial fitted.
God damn, its tight. With the weather seal fitted the front sits 1cm out of the original seats.
What are people doing?
Removing seal & just fitting up tight against holder?
Keeping seal & Packing retaining bracket screws?
Are you drilling side-light hole big enough for side-light holder to sit through? Does it not interfere with sub-structure of holder? Or just wires?

Best bet is to drill through the sides for the sidelights, I find doing both is best using a 'stepped' drill bit. Place the headlight in the holder look through the glass and get yourself an accurate mark for where the sidelight needs to be then drill a hole larger than you need. The sidelight then fits neatly. If you dont fit the rubber part on the back of the new headlight then they fit, just. Best bet is to try and enlarge the holes at the rear.

They are a (tight) push fit into the hole in the side of the lamp, and do not require the brackets to be modified.

I managed to get ours test fitted back in, they are tight, but they just about go in with the covers without modifying the brackets.

Liking them Mike.
If you keep the rear weather seal, the front will be about 10mm from original light seats, but it does mean they sit flush with the inner high-beam. You would need to pack the stainless front holders though. Love to know what others are/have done.
I hear talk about changing wiring to make the most of the H4 bulbs. Any more advice?

I haven't got the Hellas myself, but I had to modify the buckets to fit my Sylvanias.

I had to increase the diameter of the hole at the back, and cut out a slot for the sidelight bulb.

Be careful with packing. Unless your headlights have a good solid mounting, they will move about, even if only slightly. That'll mess up the headlight alignment and you'll be forever faffing around for every MOT.

That needs to be done in order for them to work properly

I haven't gotten around to making the wiring change yet, but I will be doing it over the coming weeks. As far as I understand it, it's just a case of changing the position of the pins.

Hazaah, a nice easy job.

Two tiny flat screwdrivers. Catch on connectors is disengaged via the front of holder with one screwdriver & use other to push connector out of holder.
All swapped over, no damage to holders or connectors.

Makes a nice change!

There is something screwy with those instructions above. If it were a simple matter of transposing the two feeds, you wouldn't get the telltale "glow" of the high beams when on dip beam before the change (see For The Love of Cars to see what I mean). It is a very long time since I worked out the change, but you definitely have to re-order all three.

Including reference to DeLorean wiring colours and in the car's perspective (ie, "left" means "towards the left of the car") You should wire as follows

Re-install the BLACK wire(s) to the LEFT
Re-install the WHITE/BLUE wire(s) to the RIGHT
Re-install the RED/BLUE wire(s) to the TOP

The hella lights can be installed with the rubber cover. It's a tight fit and I recommend using longer screws. It all gets squashed in nice and snug, but the surrounds are plenty strong enough to handle this.

I decided to take feed and earth from the wiring to front indicators near the connectors. Green is the flasher, Red is now the side-light feed & black is the now shared earth..................



All working, happy days..................................

I've fitted lights, to the above drawings. All seems okay, and to be working correctly.
Is this HB 'glow' very very faint?
