What oil to go for?

Basic NooB question bit what oil should i use to top up my D, 10w/40 or 20w/50?
What's the difference?
Not knowing what was in there before will it matter if it's mixed?

This question will get big controversial arguments going on here lol! This and "Tyre Talk" :lol:

I have always used 10W40. Don't mix oil weights.

Fully empty and replace with new if in doubt as to what's in there right now.

What the man above wrote, lol the car was designed to use good old fashioned mineral motor oil so dont waste your money on fully synthetic stuff. I used this last time (because it's cheap) http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-a ... &0&cc5_245

Ok, going to do the full change.
Is the Mahle filter on this page a good fit: http://www.rockauto.co.uk/catalog/x,car ... ttype,5340

Reading up I would need about 7 liters of oil, is that right?
Also where is the best place to get a plug removal tool?

To the full mark should be 6.5ltrs. I recommend filling up with 6ltrs and then wait a bit to watch where it settles. You'll find from the dip stick that the oil should be pretty well up between the min and max marks. Once happy it's at least half way between the two marks, run the engine. Just let it tick over on idle for 5-10 mins. Then stop. Have a cup of tea and leave for 15-20 mins and the recheck the level on the stick and additionally fill accordingly. I normally don't take the oil to the max mark. A little below. Ample for lubrication without putting the additional stress of a full engine for the colder weather where the oil is real thick and goo'y.

Others may have a different approach.

But yeah, 7ltrs will fill the engine with some left over for future top-ups should you need them.

I use Halfrauds oil filter. It's a "HOF206" in their books.

FRAM PH2964

MAHLE OC981, OC606, OC501 (will all fit but depends on how big you want to go (different lengths - more length, more oil contained)

I'm pretty sure a 3/4" breaker bar/socket wrench fits the square hole for the sump plug on the engine. Maybe with an extension bar?

(I have a tool, so never tried, but something tells me I either checked or eye-balled it one time to verify my suspicion)

You may have to grind a small taper on it….or Halfrords certainly used to sell a 'multi-tool'.

As I was wanting to get the job done this week, if Halfords sell something that will do the job all the better.
A quick search for mult-tool however on the halfords site brings up 60 items! Not sure which one of these would be suitable:

I may be wrong but don't think you'll get a ratchet on the back of it. The sump plug is (stupidly) level with the chassis cross member so you've not got a lot of clearance.

I use the Draper version of one of these, which you can get a spanner around:

Or alternatively as the other Rich H has discovered, the square metal bar that goes through a door between the two door handles fits perfectly Smile

Good point Rich! See! I knew there was a reason we keep you around. :lol:

That link is similar to one I put above and is the same type I have (although not necessarily same make). I'm also pretty sure mine doesn't have a hole through it.
