Jeremy Vine Show on Radio 2

Quote:Wind power, solar power - give me strength! Fine on a small domestic scale but as a national source of power?! Pfffff.

This is a snippet from a Horizon program presented by Prof Brian Cox where he talks to Saul Griffith about what would be needed to be able run the planet entirely on renewable energy within the next 25 years. A cut down version of Sauls talk which can be found by Googling him.

PLEASE NOTE THE 'F' WORD IS USED

A real wake up call to all those folks who are thinking of sticking a grands worth of solar panels on their house - you'll need about 41 square meters of solar panels to actually make any difference...

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not.

I remember you telling us about that Rich, scary stuff if you think about it.

Did you see Brian Cox on the 'Solar System' programme last night? I loved the bit where
he went in an English Electric Lightning at the beginning (one of my all time fave planes,
along with Concorde and the TSR2), it was amazing watching this thing take off then
vertically climb up to 60,000 feet *bows down not worthy*.

Apologies, going OT now.....

Overly simplistic - for example he assumes nuclear reactors to be of the order of 1GW where they're already building 5+GW gas cooled reactors. If we really came up against it, we have the technology to build sodium/potassium cooled fast breeder reactors to do a *lot* more than that. They're just very, very, very scary.

Hi guys, long time since I've posted lol, hope you're all well! My Mum was listening when all this was happening, because she's my Mum she obviously knew a LOT more than they did on the radio show - because of me lol! When she got home she even said she was tempted to ring me to say put Radio 2 on... she was also tempted to ring in and say you're talking a load of rubbish, "these are the facts"! Shocking! No doubt he had a million emails land in his inbox putting him straight!
Kind Regards,
