So to sum up. As the SKF sleeves cost several times the cost of a new oil seal.....
Personally i'd try and buy the latest Renault seals as mentioned by Martin, if when fitted you do end up with a slight drip, (unlikely as your drive shafts don't appear pitted) then you could consider fitting the new metal SKF sleeve to the drive shaft and another new seal.
Sorry if I've missed anything as I dip in and out...New book taking up all my time.

Thanks for all your help people. I'll try and go to a Renault dealer and speak to their parts department.
I'll ask for drive seals for a 95'ish late model Mk2 Renault Espace with the 2.9 V6 12 valve PRV6 engine and UN1 gearbox then. See what sort of answer I get back.
Chris P, I'm not sure if my drive shafts are pitted or not. I'm not sure how you know what the state of my shafts are?! confused. As a precautionary measure, in case my shafts ARE pitted, i'd like to have these sleeves ready for fitting of the new seals. I'll probably just put them on anyway, and save messing about later on. So with this in mind, can you please point out to me WHICH sleeves it is I need to buy from the link below? pretty please?

Just to bring some more information to the table on this topic.
I've been advised, that it seem that the correct diameter for the rim that the seal sits on, is 42mm. I guess with time, and potential pitting, this can be reduced slightly to make a smaller diameter. As a result, the recommendation, when referenced against Stunned_Monkey's link earlier in the thread is to get one of the following from page 10 of the .PDF.

Just as a further update to this thread.
Been on the phone to an authorised SKF dealer (Brammer in Coventry), and for the SKF speedi sleeve, part number CR 99169, you're looking at £38.71 each (inc. VAT).
Also, I've been on the phone to a Renault dealer (Coventry again). I've been quoted for the Renault part number (7703087136) equivalent for matching DMC part number 104216. This is the most suspected oil lip seal required for replacement to fix my oil leak in my gearbox. Renault are quoting £18.48 each. The chap couldn't tell me any matching vehicles. Their system doesn't work like that. The cross reference Renault part number comes from stunned_monkey's link to the Renault Alpine pdf. Section 21.201, part number 16.
I think i'm going to plug for getting both sides done at once. So i'm ordering 2 of everything. I've reasoned that I might as well replace both sides, since the other one is bound to go at some point, probably shortly after getting the one side done (sod's law demands it). Since you need Darren C's special tool for the job, while i'm borrowing that, then I might as well sort the car out fully for as long a time as possible.
So, because this job is a "fully empty out all the gearbox oil" job, my next question is, what is the recommended transmission oil for putting in new once the car is back together again? Weighting/Type/Brand ? I recently renewed the transmission oil in my Civic, and was recommended to buy the replacement stuff from Honda themselves. So this is what I did. Unfortunately, my local DMC dealer closed down in '82. So now i'm not sure what to get, and from where?
Any advice?

75W90 suitable for transaxles ie diff and gears (sometimes referred to as GL4&5).

IIRC 3.7l probably cheaper to buy 5l rather than 1l bottles.

Cheers Chris. I ready earlier on a site in the states that the quantity is 3L, so now i'm a bit confused. Does it tell you in the handbook for the car? (Mine is in Edinburgh, otherwise i'd look myself)

Now I look at the 'book' it states 0.97 US gallons/6.5 UK Pints or 3.7 Litres. to meet spec MIL - L2105C or API - GL5
SAE 75w below -10c
SAE 80w above -10c
I had a 1 US gallon (3.785l) bottle of Lucas synthetic 75-90w gear oil given to me that I'm trying and there does seem to be a little more than .085l left in there, so I guess I probably got about 3.5-3.6l in mine when I changed it a few months ago. TIP. make sure you can undo the filler plug before draining the oil out..........

A far as your tip goes, thanks, but it's ok. I'm planning on just turning the car over on to its side to refill the gearbox. :wink:
(kidding. But I know that hint anyway. Obvious when you think about it, but if you don't think about it..... oops potential! lol!)
I did the gearbox oil in the Civic only a couple of weeks ago, and it was the first thing i did - checked BOTH bolts would undo before even buying the oil.

That's OK then thought it was worth repeating! on my car the fill plug came out all OK, unfortunately the drain plug had to be drilled out to remove it, not much fun upside down..... Still plenty of lubrication for the drill bits :roll: :roll: lol
