Door pull strap attachment

I had to remove the door panels to repair my driver's side electric window that had come out of the runner. Whilst I had the panels off, I could see that the door pull strap was not fixed to anything inside the panel and (stupidly) just put the panel back on.

Now the pull strap came off in my hand the other day, so I'm going to need to fix it properly. 

How should this be attached? It looked as though mine had some stitching that had come unstitched, but what should stop this pulling out of the slot

I believe they were fixed to the door on the inside, one of the 'fiddly' fixings you have to reach from with the top part of the door trim removed.

 my window has jumped out of the runner again so I'm going to need to remove the door panel again
