On some cars thay fitted a plastic cap to protect the area,

...This made me look at this part of my car more closely. I always knew that the driver's side plastic cap (since I have one on this side ONLY) has been damaged in the past, and I'm now convinced it's been made worse from Evesham the other week. Anyway, it made me check out the caps on both Ed's site, and the US site.
So, can someone explain to me why there is a need for the NARROW versions, and the WIDE versions?
NARROW = W300002 and W300006 (BLK & GRY)
WIDE = W300009 and W300010 (GRY & BLK)
The caps don't appear on the drawings for reference on either site.
Just curious, as if I decide to buy a set, for each side, then I'm right now not sure of which pair to get?
The caps i'm discussing, are the ones on the bolster, rear end, adjoining the arm rest on the door, so is exposed in front of the seat belt harness, when the door(s) is/are open.
