From Mongolia to the UK - Road Legal question - howielambert - 23 Nov 2015 My 1981 Delorean is enroute from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia to Harwich, ETA the first week of December. Can anyone recommend a good shipping agent that can clear the car through UK customs? Also, is there a mechanic or garage that is known to carry out the necessary changes to lights etc to make the car UK road legal? Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks RE: From Mongolia to the UK - Road Legal question - Chris Williams - 24 Nov 2015 That's a strange location to be coming from! Most people use Trans-Global Logistics or Hill shipping both have imported lots of DeLoreans in to the UK. Any good automotive electrician or garage should be able to make the modifications for you, there's not a lot to be done though. Replace outer front headlights to UK spec ones and fit a foglight plus some other minor bits and bobs, so it's not difficult. Chris RE: From Mongolia to the UK - Road Legal question - Stuart Rees - 25 Nov 2015 Do you live in Harwich or is that the shipping port of entry? PJ Grady is on Canvey Island if you need specialist work done, but changing lights is an ok job to do yourself or the local mechanic... I would love to see pictures of a DeLorean in Mongolia... That would be a first. Whats your DeLorean story? RE: From Mongolia to the UK - Road Legal question - 88mph - 25 Nov 2015 As said, easy enough for any garage, even yourself. But totally interested in how the D ended up in outer Mongolia. RE: From Mongolia to the UK - Road Legal question - howielambert - 28 Nov 2015 I am based in Mongolia and like quirky cars. Hence the fascination with the DMC. I found a good one in Oregon and travelled there to see the car and shipped it to Ulaanbaatar. Beautiful picture in a very nice landscape. What's the VIN of your car? RE: From Mongolia to the UK - Road Legal question - howielambert - 02 Dec 2015 Thank you for all the constructive replies. It's chassis number is 4526 - are you able to tell me anything about the cars history? I understand that it was owned in Oregon by an elderly gentleman who subsequently passed away. It has 24k on the speedo, lots of history and magazines from the 70's that feature the car and the prototypes. I gather the original owner was quite passionate about it. Sadly this is the only one in the country and hence has garnered quite a lot of attention. It has appeared in magazines and plenty of online news portals. Amazingly it gets little attention compared to my 356. Thanks again for all the help. I look forward to meeting some of you when I eventually get back to the UK. RE: From Mongolia to the UK - Road Legal question - Andy - 02 Dec 2015 VIN#04526 was for sale in Vancouver Washington in september 2014 .... Are you sure the VIN is correct? You said you bought it in Oregon? Are you sure the VIN is correct? You said you bought it in Oregon? That's the car - Vancouver Washington is a bridge away from Oregon. It is an Oregon car but was sold in Washington state RE: From Mongolia to the UK - Road Legal question - Dangermouse - 02 Dec 2015 In answer to your earlier question, many importees end up here: http://www.pjgrady.co.uk/ if the owner doesn't fancy doing it themselves RE: From Mongolia to the UK - Road Legal question - howielambert - 02 Dec 2015 Thank you. As much as I would like to do it myself, it may prove difficult logistically. I would like to get the car checked over by someone that knows them well, get it road legal and use it when I am back in the UK. RE: From Mongolia to the UK - Road Legal question - Guinney1971 - 02 Dec 2015 that's an amazing couple of cars you have there, and a definite contender for a magazine article with pics of both if possible. when are you back in ole Blighty? Whats Mongolia like? I only ever see it on natural history programmes, usually involving the 'native people' and their herds of horses. RE: From Mongolia to the UK - Road Legal question - howielambert - 04 Dec 2015 Unfortunately I don't know when I will be back, chances are I will make a short trip over year end. Mongolia is an interesting place - best to see it in the summer when the weather is hospitable. It's currently minus 22 and gets as low as -40. Not much fun driving a classic car on roads with ice two inches thick - hence sending them back to the UK. It's an amazing place if you like off road driving. |
