Looking for Front Shock /spring....cross reference - dave t - 30 Jun 2013

Hi Guys....

For a few weeks now Ive been googling front shocks and springs for the D. ...still running on the US ones
looking to fit a KYB / Monroe or other alternative that would suit as I cant bring myself to pay for overkill high performance spax shocks when there are possible other options out there at half the price...same can be said for the front springs.

We all seem to be 'shelling' out for springs & shocks at inflated prices when these could be bought off the shelf if a correct cross reference is found something the dealers are understandably keeping to themselves.

The Mitsubishi pajero / shogun is a good fit (can be bought for less tahn£80 a pair)but the shock dampening maybe too strong for the D as it a 4X4 application. My next step is to measure up the springs/shocks in ALL respects and email all the European manufacturers for a suitable match. Truck cab shocks may even fit a D front suspension ..thinking here in all dimensions
Does anyone have any dimensions ..I confident a suitable cross reference can be got from any motor factors.

Any thoughts?
Dave

The shocks have covered again recently, they are now freely available by several manufactures worldwide...see "shocking Shockers"

The springs are a different matter.

About 15 years ago, some UK owners were then in the habit of getting the "angle grinder out" to shorten the front springs!

To fill this gap in the market, DMCH asked if they could use MY car to re-develop the springs and shockers using a the leading UK suspension expert. All went well and DMCH subsequently supplied full sets of springs and shockers. But by the time they had been made in the UK, shipped to the USA and then shipped back....and then they would ONLY supply in full sets of 4.....they were very expensive! Most UK folk just wanted 2 lower front springs, but no matter what I said to DMCH, I couldn't get them to supply just a pair of lowered front springs. ( I think they now have them made in the USA)

So I simply had my own made, in Sheffield and sold them for about £60 a pair...... over 300 sets sold over a 10 year period. I only stopped having them made when a couple sets failed, a few years ago and attracted a load of flack on this forum. (I later had my stock 100% re-tested and all was OK)

Springs do occasional fail...mine broke on a Granada in the 80's and a friend of mine had to have them all replaced on his 3 year old Audi TT !

As I was not in it for the money, just as a service to club members, I just stopped selling them.

I still have a few left, PM me if you want any.....but I don't do shipping!

As with the shockers, I think several dealers now supply various "upgraded " versions of springs....Ed ...Martin?

I don't think there are any 'proper' X-Ref's otherwise I'm sure they would have been found by now. As ChrisP wrote both he and MartinG had springs made I don't think either were what I would call expensive. And as far as I'm aware there are no direct x-ref's for the shocks, that's why I had the SPAX ones made so they were an option available at a reasonable price in the UK (though the price seems to have gone up recently) wonder if that's because DMCH now sell them?
Chris
Edit: However if you can find a X-ref that would be great news for everyone, the more options the better in my opinion.

Just to add if you need any references, I have a full set of NOS unused DeLorean springs (original height) in a box never fitted if you need to get any mesurements, for both front and rear.

Chris ...

Thanks for the heads up....on shocking shockers looks like the high performance adjustable shocks I have on my motocross racing bike. Mr Green

Chrs last week in our garage we removed 6 suspension struts for either spring or shock renewal. I completely get that springs can snap at anytime. Ive seen springs come off a car with 30k mls broken in 2 places. Orientation of the spring during fitment is so important

Anyone tried any of these...have ordered a set of Springs from Ed....

While the springs are out Im going to throw in a pair of fresh gas shocks if possible.....

Anyone have any experience of any of these, do you think they'll be suitable with Eds lower springs?

Monroe 32150 (available in the US)
Gabriel 81478 (available in the US)
Febi Bilstein 24-634038....(this is a listed Delorean European Shock) Ive found Febi products to be top notch. Awaiting availability on these.

Thoughts on these
Dave

I assume your just talking about the fronts? Ed's are probably the only lowering springs available, Though I think ChrisP still has some as he mentioned. I had Ed's on my last car and I thought they were a bit to low, MartinG's had good reputation but I dont think he sells them anymore.
Sorry cant help on any of the shocks, but it would be great if you could find a match.

If you look in the 'how to' section you will find an article on replacing front springs, in this there is a picture showing the height of three different springs, this may give you an idea.

I stopped having my springs made due to a simultaneous hike in the cost of:

1) The springs
2) The shift to 20% vat
3) The cost of shipping a set to the US (my main market)

I also experienced problems of the springs being too low on one car and too high on others (including one set swapped from one "too low" car to one where they were perfect). Ed's tend to be too high on a lot of cars, in my opinion.

The best shocks are the Protech ones Chris Hawes had made.

The ultimate solution is a set of coilovers developed by deloman from Germany
