My D came with Valvoline 10w30 in and I was going to buy a bit more for topups/changing, but found that it's quite hard to get in the UK. Would it be a better idea to drain it then replace with a fresh oil or would another 10w30 oil be ok?
I'll start a debate that has probably already been done a few times, but I'll ask anyway
Which oil should we use?

...Like tyres, some people will say cheap is as good as.....but I've got Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 semi-synthetic in LEX. Any semi-synthetic of similar weight should be good enough though. I just treat my old girl to the good stuff, cause I don't change it that much with the mileage I do. I know once every 6 months is recommended, but I've been going on the principle of once every 6,000 miles. In my case, 6,000 miles after two years. Oil is getting Spartan these days, so we'll probably run out, or not be able to afford the stuff before the engine is likely to die of lack of oil changes.

Drain and refill, good excuse to get that rear deck off and have a look under the hood if it's not been serviced since you got it.
As Rissy said, go for 10W-40 Castrol Magnatec. Places like Eurocar Parts normally have it up at circa £17 a tub, or you could try Hellfrauds you might get lucky and they'll have it on offer.

I change mine out every six months, which is around every 2500-3000 miles on the mileage I do.

My car is running happily on standard oil, as Martin and RichH said, the engine
is nothing special and is 1970's technology, so doesnt need fancy oil like some
modern engines do.

Cheers Mike. The car had a fresh water pump and fuel pump, as well as engine recondition so seems to be a great runner with low mileage. The great thing about this conversion is that the whole rear deck lifts up in one go for easy access to the engine. The rear vents slide off with just 4 screws.
The oil and water levels have been perfect after a few good runs so i've got plenty of miles left before I need to consider an oil change but at least I know what to go for now and can refer back to this thread! Cheers matey.

Yes I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over using the cheap stuff. More powerful turbo PRVs can and have hit 250k with nothing but oil and filter changes.
Coolant.... now that's another story.....

Cheers for the replies people. It currently has Prestone in there and is half way up the rounded metal tank and remains steady.
