Alternator wiring - Stuart Rees - 09 Jan 2008

Hi, I'm in the process of installing a SS exhaust on my D and since we disconnected everything before Xmas ( & didn't take any 'before' photos ) we're scratching our heads to see which wire goes where.
Plus the previous owner did a bodge to the wires anyway :?

There's supposed to be 6 brown wires connected to the alternator & dissapearing up into the engine bay but we don't have them!! Instead we have a black wire that can only reach the starter solenoid - does this look right or wrong to anyone?

( we've yet to connect the red cables & insulate everything from the heat that'll come of the exhaust.)

Any help appreciated

Stu

For alternators the B+ goes to the battery plus terminal.
On the Delorean these are the brown wires that go to the ring terminals.

Thw W is the wire to the alternator warning lamp to the dashboard and requires a 2w bulb to excite the current.
On the Delorean this is the blue or the yellow wire (I think).

Can't tell which wire is which on the photo but unwind the black tape on the larger wire. This may be the brown wires.

You also have another large red cable with the ring terminal on.
This may be the jump start post on the inner rear wing inside the engine bay.

If I get chance I'll take a pic of my car wiring for reference.

Hope this helps.

NickT.

Just found that the alternator isn't original but a US Delco-Remy one, so isn't maked B+, W, etc
Will get a better pic up tomorrow
Thanks

Thanks guys, I couldn't compare my alternator with any other D 'cos mine is an after market one, but I think i've confirmed where the cables/wires should go by this diagram ( on the left),

Instead of two batches of brown wire, I've got one big fat black wire going from the BAT post directly to the starter solenoid to connect with the battery positive.
This won't be relevant to any one else here unless you've got a Delco Remy alternator.
Cheers Allen for the advise, I'll try reconnecting everything today.
